Exploring Alternate Reality (AR) technology with TouchSpark Studios

By 30 September 2024 News

Founded in June 2024 by siblings Josh and Avery Arcari, TouchSpark Studios is the latest creative installation at Hamilton’s Cotton Factory. It blends innovative technology and immersive art.

Though the studio is newly minted, Josh and Avery have long designed film, theatre, and video game installations. With a shared history of independent projects, the pair decided to unite their talents under a single banner and launch TouchSpark Studios, which merges their distinct skills into a collaborative powerhouse.

At the heart of TouchSpark is their passion for bridging the gap between the physical and digital worlds. The duo works on large-scale installations and tech-driven interactive experiences, creating a unique blend of art and technology that captivates audiences. “We mostly develop audience management solutions,” Josh says. ” Whether it’s a performance, presentation, booth, or installation, we focus on keeping people engaged in an interactive and exciting way.”

A great example of this innovative approach is their latest installation at the Cotton Factory, where Josh was inspired to take on the unique challenge of designing within a staircase. “I’ve become very interested in ‘improvised’ spaces,” he explains, noting how unusual venues like restaurants and even coat check closets have shaped his creative journey. The Cotton Factory’s vertical space offered an entirely new opportunity for him to stretch his skills.

The installation utilizes Alternate Reality (AR) technology, allowing visitors to experience it through smartphones. The setup is simple: scan a QR code on the wall, and you’re transported into a digital world that unfolds around you. This minimal physical footprint allows for a high-impact, accessible experience—something that TouchSpark is known for.

Beyond the Cotton Factory installation, Josh and Avery are constantly developing new ways to engage audiences. One of their current projects is an interactive lighting system that lets audiences control stage lighting by scanning a QR code, an idea that has been used to great success at drag performances. “We’re applying this to music acts and potentially theatre productions as well,” Josh adds.

TouchSpark Studios is more than just a tech-driven creative studio—it’s a space where digital tools elevate artistic expression. Avery, a skilled programmer and game designer, specializes in real-time visual effects, while Josh’s background in theatre, film, and graphic design informs their aesthetic approach. This combination of technology and design makes them an invaluable resource for artists and companies alike, offering everything from AR installations for corporate events to interactive lighting for live performances.

Josh sums up their vision: “Variety is truly the spice of life! Meeting new people, engaging with interesting projects, and hearing what artists dream of is my greatest pleasure in starting this studio.”
