Cotton Factory Career Launcher Artist Residency

The Cotton Factory is pleased to announce an open call for submissions for the Career Launcher Artist Residency is designed to support the individual artistic practices and professional ambitions of emerging and mid-career artists/creatives in Hamilton.
This unique opportunity provides the selected recipient with free studio space within the historic Cotton Factory, offering an immersive experience in a vibrant community of artists, designers, and creative professionals.
Who Should Apply?
We invite applications from emerging and mid-career artists and creatives across disciplines committed to advancing their practice and expanding their professional networks. This residency is ideal for individuals seeking dedicated time and space for creative exploration, production, and collaboration.

Eligibility Requirements:
- Applicants must be emerging or mid-career artists/creatives based in Hamilton or the surrounding region.
- Must be able to commit to regular studio use and engagement with the community.
How to Apply:
Interested artists should submit the following materials via email to [insert contact email]:
- A letter of intent outlining their artistic practice, goals for the residency, and how the opportunity will support their career development
- A current CV or artist résumé
- A portfolio with up to 10 images of recent work (or links to relevant digital/video work)
- Contact information for two professional references
Applications will be accepted from artists who are:
- Emerging or mid-career artists/creatives (not actively enrolled as a student during the residency period)
- Living and/or working in the Greater Hamilton Area (Ancaster, Binbrook, Dundas, Flamborough, Glanbrook, Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Waterdown) or Six Nations of the Grand River
- Able to dedicate twenty-plus (20+) hours in-studio per week for the designated six (6) month period to creative practice
- Willing to conduct a public artist talk during their residency term at the applicable minimum Canadian Artist Representation (CARFAC) payment rate
- Working in an eligible artistic discipline, including fashion, film/television, literary arts, music, theatre, visual and media arts

Selection Process:
A selection committee will review applications and notify the chosen recipient by April 9th, 2024.

Adjudication Criteria:
Each adjudicator assigns a score in each of the four (4) categories:
- Artistic Statement/Creative Vision
- Work Plan
- Impact Statement
- Examples of Work

Applicants must upload the following documents (either as separate files or combined into a single document):
- Work Plan
- Your plan should demonstrate readiness to maximize your time (minimum 20+ hours per week) in the studio.
- You may reference a ‘# of weeks’ or month-to-month format.
- While plans may evolve, your submission should outline your intended activities.
- Impact Statement (MAX 500 words)
- A written description of:
- What do you hope to achieve during the residency
- Why this residency is well-suited to your plans
- How this residency will advance your practice or artistic/creative career
- A written description of:
- Additional Examples of Work (if applicable)
- Please submit in .PDF file format.
- Ensure files contain excerpts of work and are no more than three (3) pages long.
